Fulbright Program
The Fulbright Program was established in 1946 and is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State. Approximately 273,500 "Fulbrighters" have participated in the Program since its inception over fifty years ago. The Fulbright Program awards approximately 6,000 new grants annually, and operates in over 150 countries worldwide. It is the U.S. Government’s most prestigious program for academic exchange.
Fulbright Awards in Slovenia
The Slovenian Fulbright Program sends approximately six to eight Slovenian scholars and students to the U.S. each year and brings approximately six to eight American scholars and students to Slovenia. The program is co-sponsored by the Slovenian Government.
Fulbright Scholarships are awarded competitively to Slovenian citizens who wish to conduct research or lecture at American universities, and are subject to the availability of funds. The minimum requirements to apply are:
- Slovenian citizenship and evidence of employment in the Republic of Slovenia
- Proficiency in English appropriate to the proposed research project to be carried out in the United States
- Completed application package
- Completed reference forms
Fulbright awards come in two categories: Postdoctoral Research/Lecturing (Fulbright Scholars); and Predoctoral Research (Fulbright Students). Applicants for Fulbright Postdoctoral Research/Lecturing awards must have a completed Master's degree at the time they apply. Applicants in all academic fields are eligible and welcome to apply. This year’s competition will include four to five 5-month Postdoctoral Research/Lecturing (Scholar) Awards and two to three 9-month Predoctoral Research (Student) Awards.
Preference is given to candidates without recent experience in the United States. Recipients of Fulbright Scholarships within the past 5 years will not be considered. Persons who are citizens of both Slovenia and the United States are also ineligible.
Fulbright grantees enter the United States on an exchange visitor (J-1) visa under a Department of State program, which requires them to return to their home countries for a minimum of two years at the end of the grant period.
