Nonimmigrant Visas

Visa Waiver Program

Many Slovenes who wish to travel to the United States for short periods may do so visa-free under the Visa Waiver Program.  If the purpose or duration of your travel means that you do not qualify for the Visa Waiver Program on your proposed trip to the United States, then you must apply for a nonimmigrant visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate outside the United States before you set out on your trip to the U.S.

The U.S. will introduce an additional requirement for all travelers under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) called the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).  This program will be voluntary for all VWP travellers beginning August 1, 2008, and will become mandatory starting January 19, 2009.  For more information about the introduction of this system, please click here.

What is a Visa?

The visa itself is a sticker placed into the traveler's passport.  The visa constitutes permission to apply to enter the United States, and must be presented at the port of entry to U.S. immigration officials, who will decide how long a traveler may remain in the United States.

What Kind of Visa?

There are several types of visas for temporary visitors to the United States.  Please select Visa Types from the left hand side of this screen to find out specific documents, other evidence, and/or additional processing requirements associated with each visa type.

In-Person Interviews

Nearly all visa applicants must be interviewed in person by a U.S. consular officer, who will decide whether or not the applicant meets the requirements of U.S. immigration law and is therefore eligible for a visa.

Visa Processing Times

In most cases, the processing time is one business day after the visa interview, and we will mail the completed passport and visa back to you, which takes another few days, depending upon where you live.

Please be aware that these processing times are only averages. Other factors, such as the need for special clearances, incomplete applications, and anti-fraud investigations may influence the processing of individual visa cases. Timing will vary based upon the circumstances of each case. Please apply for your visa as early as possible. To see current visa times at U.S. Embassies worldwide, including in Ljubljana, please click here.

Information For Non-Slovenes

If you do not live in Slovenia, the you should save the application fee and apply at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the country where you reside.  In general, applicants who are not Slovene citizens or who do not reside permanently in Slovenia will rarely be issued visas in Ljubljana.

If you are a non-Slovene who lives permanently in Slovenia, then you should be aware that there may be strict limitations on the validity period of the visa that we can issue to you, and there may be an additional fee that you must pay, over and above the standard US$131 application fee. These limitations and this additional fee are reciprocal measures, meaning that the United States will only issue a visa valid for a maximum of one year, for example, because that is the maximum visa that your government will issue to an American citizen. For a table listing all of these extra fees and limitations, arranged by country, please click here.
